Seven-time UIM Class 1 World Powerboat champion and leading light in the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship, Steve Curtis, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for ‘Services to Sport’.
Steve’s award comes on the back of his 100th powerboat grand prix victory this month in Garrucha, Spain. The win puts Steve and Spirit of Norway team mate Bjorn Gjelsten at the top of the 2006 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship.
On hearing of his award, Steve said: “I am really honoured to be awarded an MBE. Outside of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Championship, powerboat racing is fairly low profile in the UK and as such receives little recognition. I hope that this award will assist in recognising the efforts of those involved within the sport and their continued hard work that keeps the UK at the forefront of powerboating around the world.”
Martin Sanders, General Manager, Honda (UK) Power Equipment commented: “We are delighted that Steve has finally got the recognition he deserves for his achievements and for services to the powerboating industry. Steve has not only been the face and organiser of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Powerboat Series, but also a mentor to many of the Series competitors. This award couldn’t have come at a better time for Steve who is currently leading the Class-1 championship.”
Steve began his racing career on two wheels, competing on Honda bikes as a young schoolboy and junior motocross champion in England. With a taste for competition he went on to compete in powerboat racing and has set a string of records throughout his career. Outside of racing he runs Cougar Marine, as well as continuing to fly the flag for Honda by running their Formula 4-Stroke Powerboat Series. Now in its eighth year, the Series casts off from Douglas Bay in the Isle of Man on the 24th & 25th June. Steve will be back racing at the next round of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship in Arendal, Norway on the 23rd July.
