At sea. Pacific record from West to East difficult landing for the trimaran Geronimo PDF Print E-mail

Vincent Caumes / Amy Halsted:

On her eleventh day of racing, the CapGemini/Schneider Electric trimaran was 750 miles from San Francisco at 10 h (GMT) this morning. While Geronimo is still advancing towards her goal in spite of the difficult conditions, the landing is looking tricky.

An unavoidable calm straight ahead

«Luckily, Geronimo is a good all-rounder, who even in quiet weather advances well. We're making 9/10 knots in seven knots of wind. We're going to have to do our best to get away from this area as quickly as possible, as there's no getting around it. If we wanted to avoid it by going to the north or to the south, we would have to cover 1000 miles to reach any wind. So we've no alternative but to go through it. It's like a patch on the ocean that we have no choice but to go through. How long is it going to take us? I don't know. In twelve hours or so, we should know a little more.»

A long tunnel

«This Pacific crossing has been like a long tunnel of mist and rain. It's unsettled and the forecasts are changing all the time. On board, everyone wants it to be over. The crew are still applying themselves. They have been used to working together for a long time, but it's a job, where you have to be ready for anything from the best to the worst. You might say that it's not really the best of times for now.»

Message from on board

«With Didier (Ragot), we keep thinking about some of the horrors we've already been through like this. The Azores to Brest in a week and that in early April. It is said that you have to be tough to do this job, forcing yourself to think that everything will turn out fine etc… and sometimes it does! We're really can't face having to put up with the wind dropping off. We've had enough of that since Yokohama.»

Time is the only thing in the world that everyone knows and experiences, but you can't see, feel or touch it. It can't be controlled, modified or defined. It is ethereal like thought itself. It is nowhere, yet everywhere at the same time. It is nothing and everything. It is impossible to understand it; talking about it should be banned.
