Coastguard news:
At 7am this morning Solent Coastguard received a call from the ferry 'Cenwulf' reporting a possible man overboard. A non fare paying passenger was spotted on the ferry at around 6:30am this morning and was not seen to disembark.
Solent Coastguard initiated a significant sea and land search using the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 'India Juliet,' the Needles and Lymington Coastguard Rescue Teams and the RNLI Lifeboats from Yarmouth and Lymington. Following an Urgent radio broadcast to shipping in the area, a local Fishing vessel and a number of yachts also joined the search.
Assisted by the latest search planning technology (Search And Rescue Information System - SARIS) Solent Coastguard co-ordinated a comprehensive search using a significant number of assets.
In support of the Coastguard led operation, Hampshire Police followed up enquires onboard the Ferry and at 9.30 am discovered the missing man asleep in a vehicle waiting to return to the main land having completed a delivery on the Isle of Wight.
Coastguard Duty Area Officer, Mark Rodaway said: "Although the weather in the Solent is fine this morning the sea temperature is still only around 10 degrees Celsius, it was imperative that Coastguards at Solent initiated a swift and comprehensive search to cover the possibility of the man having fallen overboard. Although I am pleased that the missing person has been found safe and well, clearly had he been a fare paying passenger then this lengthy search might have been avoided." |
