Josh Junior has been awarded the CORK scholarship for 2006 supported by the St John’s Rotary Trust. The 16 year-old Wellington Laser sailor will travel to compete at the CORK (Canadian Olympic Regatta, Kingston) in Canada this August.

The intention of the scholarship is to provide one of New Zealand’s promising youth sailors with exposure to international competition. Junior, from Worser Bay Boating Club in Wellington, will sail in both the Youthfest and the Open competition which take place consecutively at the week long regatta.

Junior is an ambitious young sailor who has proven at this years YouthSail regatta that he is capable of top results by winning the first two races. His overall result at the national youth regatta was fourth, sailing in a fleet of 13 and against others up to two years older.

His other results from this year include a 10th place at the New Zealand Laser National Championship, 12th at the ISAF Grade 2 Sail Auckland regatta and 11th at the ISAF Grade 1 Sail Melbourne regatta.

Junior is targeting selection for the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team 2007 and the experience at this year’s CORK regatta will be of great benefit should he make the team next year. In 2007 the ISAF World Youth Championship is to be held in Kingston, Canada.

“It will give me further international experience,” said Junior when asked how the regatta would benefit his sailing. “It will help me become familiar with the venue and conditions for the 2007 ISAF World Youth Champs.”

Junior is provided with airfares and regatta entry fees and will also have accommodation organised with a host family at the event.

The scholarship supported by the St Johns Rotary Trust was introduced in 1996 and last years recipient, Matt Coutts has been named in the 2006 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team to go to Weymouth in July this year.
