Environmental news: Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) has announced today that it, along with co-owner PPL Corporation, is donating nearly 1,000 acres of pristine waterfront land at their Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation plant in Conestoga, Pa., to The Conservation Fund, a national environmental nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting important landscapes and waterways. The donation is the culmination of several years of conservation efforts and will protect three miles of woods, bluffs and islands in and along the Susquehanna River for purposes of conservation and public recreation. Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation is located along the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania's Lancaster and York counties and is co-owned by Constellation Energy and PPL Corporation. "Constellation Energy believes proper care of the environment is essential to the well-being of our company, our employees, our neighbors and the broader global community," said Michael J. Wallace, executive vice president of Constellation Energy and president of the company's subsidiary, Constellation Generation Group. "Our donation to The Conservation Fund demonstrates our continuing commitment to balancing the company's goals of environmental stewardship and safe, reliable power generation. We made the decision to donate this land because it's the right thing to do - for the environment, the community, and the future." The newly protected land will aid in the conservation of wildlife habitat and water quality along the lower Susquehanna River. Located within the Susquehanna Highlands, the area provides important feeding and resting areas for migratory birds and habitat for threatened and endangered species including bald eagle, black tern and osprey. The conservation of the land also supports Chesapeake Bay restoration initiatives, as the Susquehanna River contributes nearly half of the freshwater flow to the Chesapeake Bay. "The Conservation Fund is proud to have played a role in helping our partners safeguard the incredible wildlife habitat, recreation areas and historic resources associated with the river as it makes its way to the Chesapeake Bay," added Larry Selzer, president of The Conservation Fund. "The agreement to donate this land is the culmination of over five years of discussions on how to preserve significant portions of lands in the lower Susquehanna River corridor in their natural state for future generations," added Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation's president, Marshall Kaiser. "We have found in The Conservation Fund a partner whose vision for the land use matched ours, as well as one capable of advancing this vision even further." |
