Boat show news:

The first-ever Boats of Bond Exhibit will showcase memorabilia and actual boats from 007 thrillers at the 2006 Club Marine Melbourne Boat Show. Boats and other Bond gear have been collected from Thunderball, Diamonds are Forever, For Your Eyes Only and The World is Not Enough for the exhibit.

They are among several special attractions at this year’s Boat Show, to run from 6 to 10 July at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Other attractions include the Oceanic Australia diving pool – bring your togs and towel for a free diving lesson – plus the evergreen Flathead Fred for the kids and food, fdashion, fishing and more on the Yamaha Superstage.

Heading the list of the Bond boats is the Thunderball underwater tow sled from 1965, as used by James Bond and the villain Largo. Of 14 boats originally built for the film, only two are still known to exist, with the other example being owned by the original builder, Jordan Klein.

The Diamonds Are Forever Bath-O-Sub from 1971 is one of two originally used by 007’s nemesis, Blofeld, to escape from the oil-drilling platform that doubled as his headquarters.

Closest to a familiar production boat is the sleek Moonraker Glastron Amazon Chase Boat of 1979, which is often compared to the Aston Martin DB5 With its hidden rocket launchers, floating mines and escaping hang-glider. All of the gadgetry seen on this boat actually worked.

For Your Eyes Only contributes the Neptune Submarine, one of two originally built for the 1981 film and an actual working wet submersible that was seen throughout most of the film. It was operated by stunt men using scuba gear.

Completing the selection of Bond boats is Major Boothroyd’s “Q” Jet Boat from 1999’s The World Is Not Enough. Of 15 built for the film, today only eight survive, and the display boat is the actual vessel that performed the barrel roll stunt seen on the screen.

For some Bond fans, the accompanying super spy accessories will be just as exciting as the boats. They include 007’s electrified wristwatch from The World Is Not Enough, wrist dart gun from Moonraker, SPECTRE ring from Thunderball, rocket cigarette from You Only Live Twice, throwing star from You Only Live Twice, cell phone from Tomorrow Never Dies, Odd Job death hat from Goldfinger, Brief case from From Russia With Love and Zorin check book from A View To A Kill

Melbourne will be the first stop on a national boat show tour for the Boats of Bond, which had their first showing in New York and are making their first visit south of the equator.
