The 120 metre superyacht Galeb, which was used by President Tito, is to be sold at auction, by order of a Croatian court.
The Galeb (Seagull) had been a World War II mine layer and, before that, a cargo vessel. After being sunk by the British, towards the end of the war, it was raised and converted into the Presidential yacht.
Following the break up of Yugoslavia, the yacht was bought by John Papanicolau, a US citizen, who intended to restore the vessel to its former glory, but work never started and the Rijika shipyard, where it was moored, eventually sued for unpaid mooring fees of around €400,000. Now the court has ruled that it should be sold at auction.
Among the many famous people who cruised on the yacht, during its heyday, was British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. |
