Coastguard news:

The passenger ship ‘Calypso’, which broadcast a mayday message in the early hours of this morning, will be towed into Southampton by the Coastguard tug, Anglian Monarch. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyor will be flown out to the vessel to inspect it and ensure that it is safe to make the journey to Southampton. Sussex Fire and Rescue Service will remain on board.

The Anglian Monarch is now on scene, preparing to take the tow.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has set up its Emergency Response Centre at Southampton and arrangements for the vessel and its crew and passengers are being made from there. The Maritime Incident Response Group was also activated for the first time since its launch last month.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been informed and will be attending the vessel when she docks in Southampton.

Mark Rodaway, Duty Area Coastguard Officer said: “The fire on board is now out and I am pleased to report that there are no injuries to passengers or crew. The majority of the passengers are Dutch.

All passengers and crew will remain on board the vessel until it docks in Southampton, where arrangements will be made for disembarkation.

As a precautionary measure, a team of paramedics will be flown out by Coastguard rescue helicopter Whiskey Bravo to the vessel.”
