Chris Clode:

Members of the public will get the chance to ask searching questions to the skippers and crews taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race during the Portsmouth stopover of the gruelling round the world event. Having just encircled the globe and sailed non-stop across the north Atlantic from New York, the skippers and crews of the world’s fastest monohulls will be able to tell the assembled audience just what it is like to sail at over 30 knots in the Southern Ocean, when just one mistake could spell disaster, and much more besides.

The free Q & A session will take place on Tuesday 30th May at 1500 and will be held in the auditorium of ‘Action Stations’ in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Just 260 tickets are available and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Those wishing to attend should call Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Advanced Sales on 023 9283 9766

Whether a sailor or landlubber, the fascination of the Volvo Ocean Race has gripped young and old alike. Thousands are expected to line Southsea Seafront to watch the yachts finishing around 19th May and again for both the In Port Race on Monday 29th May and the start on 2nd June, when the Volvo Open 70 yachts head off around the British Isles en route for Rotterdam.

The skippers and crews in the Volvo Ocean Race are the top professional sailors in the world and have endured icebergs, gales, breakages, injuries and much more in their quest to win this most arduous of races.

Now is the chance for the public to get ‘up close and personal’ and ask them the sort of questions we would all like to ask and to hear of their experiences during the race.
