Fiona Brown:

For Etchells sailors the only place to be this June is Cowes, England, where the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club will be hosting both the 2006 Etchells UK National & European Championships. Racing for the Etchells UK National Championship runs from Saturday 17 to Monday 19 June and is closely followed by the European Championship from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 June.

PRO Tony Lovell, one of the Solent’s most experienced and highly regarded Race Officers, will head the Race Committee for both events and Geoff Myburgh will Chair the Jury. The fleet will be moored at Cowes Yacht Haven and aprčs sailing events will be held at the Royal Corinthian’s clubhouse with its excellent facilities, friendly atmosphere and panoramic views over the Solent.

It is anticipated that teams from Ireland, Italy, France, Germany and Scandinavia will be racing alongside a strong British contingent. The 2007 Etchells Worlds is also taking place in Cowes from 20-30 June 2007 so many crews will be taking advantage of the opportunity to get in some early practice. The closing date for entries is Friday 2 June and the Notice of Race and Entry Form can be downloaded from www.rcyc.co.uk/la/1020.

Double World Champion and reigning UK National Champion Stuart Childerley will be defending his title as will current European Champion Nils Razmilovic of the Royal Swedish YC. We can expect a bit of family rivalry as those challenging the reigning champions include Nils’s brother Ante Razmilovic, who will be looking for revenge having lost out to his brother at last year’s Europeans by just one point!
