André “Bochecha” Fonseca
Today we finally had quiet sailing after facing some rough conditions in the last days. Nothing really interesting happened, which is good as the whole crew got a chance to rest. Everyone was tired from yesterday. Lots of sail changes and a lot of squalls. As you might know, every time it rains, the winds shift and we need a sail change.
The number of changes is not as big as they could be. We are not using all our sails. The spinnaker we used so much, Scar face, asked for retirement. One section of it even got tired of us and dived looking for the company of King Neptune (sadly, this time we couldn’t recover everything...)
We had been sailing close to Ericsson for quite a while, but they found the wind sooner than us and disappeared in the horizon. Again. The ones in front of us vanished, getting to wind zones before us. The big problem about this is that there’s nothing we can do to change it. Today Torben decided to send someone up the mast to look for wind. I was the one to do it and looked for wind for a long time without success.
Last night was one tough night of sailing. The whole period I was on the deck I was wet. Really wet. It was so tough that it even hurt to be at the helm. The water is pretty salty and at night the temperature drops. Sailing gear and boots have been taken out of the closet again. Even our ski goggles and helmets are being used! The forecast is that we’ll get to the wind tonight...
We had another funny thing happening yesterday. Two of our crewmembers woke up with their nails painted! Turns out that Joca Signorini painted Marcelo’s fingernails as a revenge for a first up and painted Joca's nails when he was sleeping... Now they signed a peace agreement and are not talking about revenge. At least during this leg!
The cooking was exciting today. We gave up on the freeze dried food and had some spectacular pasta for lunch and dinner! |
