Michelle Slade:
San Francisco Speed Sailing Management opened the ‘speed box’ for the first time on Tuesday on San Francisco Bay, amid thunderous skies and rain squalls. Team Geronimo graciously agreed to take a ceremonial run through the ‘box’, kicking off the San Francisco Speed Sailing season. The international record breaking trimaran is in San Francisco for several days preparating for an ideal weather window to set out to break the San Francisco to Yokohama record.
Adverse conditions on San Francisco Bay were not conducive to setting speed records through the 'box' on Tuesday, however the graceful speed machine sped through the 'box' and continued out under the Golden Gate Bridge. According to Geronimo crew, she was able to obtain 381/2 knots on her day sail with crew and invited guests on board.
'We are excited at the prospect of hosting an international record breaker through the speed course and while conditions let us down the fact remains that Team Geronimo wanted to make a speed attempt on the Bay,' said Matt Jones, race manager for San Francisco Speed Event. 'Speed sailing and record breaking attempts are increasing in popularity and we learned a lot today which will serve us well in our June speed sailing event on the Bay. We wish Geronimo the best of luck in her record breaking attempts.'
