Elena Pipó & Neus Jordi:

The current 49er class gold medallists, Spanish team Iker Martínez/Xabi Fernández, return to the Olympic sailing circuit after taking part in some legs of the race around the World onboard Movistar. “We train here because there is a higher level in this Sofia than at the Worlds”. It is the most important event this year”, assured helmsman Iker Martínez.

Martínez/Fernández, members of the Spanish pre-Olympic team have started this edition well and are placed third overall after the first day of racing. They are satisfied with this result considering “we have a new boat and it is our first event after the Athens Olympics”, added Martínez.

The level in the class has increased since Athens, according to Iker Martínez, because the top crews have continued sailing actively and new “young teams with energy have entered the class, specially the British teams”.

The Basque crew would consider a “success” finishing among the top five at the Princesa Sofía, and “it would be fine” to be classified among the ‘top ten’. “Finishing under this position would not be good at all”, admitted Iker Martínez.

Iker and Xabi’s main objective is to have victory options in Quingdao 2008 following their experience at the Volvo Ocean Race. “It was good to have a break after the Olympics both at professional and personal level”.

Iker reminded that they have a new co-sponsor this year. Trademark Gran Crust adds to the support that the Spanish crew has received from Telefónica for many years.
