Coastguard news:
Just before 1pm today Swansea Coastguard received a 999 call from a young girl who reported that her friend had just fallen down a cliff. The children had been playing near the cliff edge at Illfracombe when one of the youngsters fell. As the child spoke to the Coastguard and described her friend's injuries, a second child fell over the cliff edge. Ilfracombe Coastguard Rescue Team was requested to attend and the Rescue helicopter 169 from RAF Chivner was also scrambled to the scene. The two children were airlifted from the bottom of the cliff and are now en route to North Devon District Hospital. The girl who contacted the Coastguard was rescued by the land based Coastguard team and is fine although she is very shaken and concerned for her friends.
Eric Birkett, Swansea Coastguard Watch Manager said: "As the school Easter holidays continue, this is another timely reminder to both children and parents of the dangers of playing unsupervised near the coast. It was very fortunate for these children that their young friend had the common sense to dial 999 and ask us for assistance." |
