Team Ellen:
Sunday, 9 April 2006 at 21:19: Currently maintaining 14+ knots of boat speed in 16 knot northerly conditions, B&Q is heading southeast further offshore to locate the more favourable conditions and in order to avoid the large sandbank along the coastline. Read the latest news from onboard..
After a slow departure from Qingdao, due to heavy fog, B&Q crossed the start line for leg 4 at 17:05:01 GMT today (09/04/06) for the 308 mile leg to Shanghai...
Latest email from Ellen:
"Well it's pretty damn foggy out here, and there is more phosphorescence than I have ever seen in my life. It's extraordinary - the sea is alight with the stuff - and it smells really fishy (which is probably due to the fact that we have just sailed through a fleet of fishing boats!). All is well, it's 0400 local time for us and Shaun, Loik and I have not had a chance to sleep yet. The watches tonight are damp and long, and with the amount of fog covering the area, we are keeping a close watch on the forward beams – it certainly makes for some interesting sailing! The fog from the land earlier was not too bad, but out here we can probably only see as far as half a mile tops. But it's dark and so it’s hard to tell. I think the situatun will be harder when it's light though, as it will be harder to see the other boats – but we shall see!
Morale is good, although I fear we shall be very tired by the time we arrive in Shanghai. It's a trip full of new challenges, but only time will reveal them! I have to go as I am struggling to type when the radar is on...my attention is not focused on the email!
