Dee Caffari:

Consistent conditions and a sail plan already set, allowed me to enjoy some rest last night and Aviva to continue surfing at good speeds. This morning there was no change to the big swell, the black clouds that threaten rain but do not deliver and the strong wind pushing Aviva along at consistent and good speeds. The one difference that was on deck this morning was a flying fish. We must be heading in the right direction. Back with my trusty dustpan in hand we flicked him back to the ocean.

I set up for the gybe and after a lot of grinding we managed to gybe and the new heading was good for progress. We managed to keep west of north. With the waves we have begun to surf and we have been at speeds in excess of 14 knots, which for my 42 tonne displacement girl is pretty good going. I think Aviva and I are thinking alike and banking some good mileage days now just in case we have a quiet spell with wind further along the track.

The next couple of days promise to deliver some more consistent days and hopefully then as the wind eases the swell will ease too, allowing us to continue the good progress we are making at the moment.

With the sky being so overcast I have had to lose the shorts and revert back to wearing my mid-layer bottoms. On deck I need to wear boots and foul weather trousers, as there is quite a lot of water and spray over the deck. I made the mistake of getting wet the other night and felt pretty cold because of it.
