Alan Green Race Director:
After listening to owners in the 2006 Baltic Sprint Cup stopover ports the Copenhagen-based organizing committee has agreed to welcome local entries joining the event for a single race within this innovative, four-race offshore regatta.
The Baltic Sprint Cup was inaugurated in 2005 as one of the most successful offshore regattas ever in Baltic waters. Then, an international fleet of 45 boats took in 8 countries in a three-week series. In 2005 the event was sponsored by NORD/LB (title sponsor) and König & Cie (port sponsor Copenhagen). The 2006 event is more streamlined, packing into 12 days the maximum sailing and partying starting with the 100th anniversary of the Stavanger Seilforening on the day before the first race leaves port on 1st July.
The new founded BANK DnB NORD in Copenhagen, a daughter of NORD/LB and DnB NOR, Norway, has taken over the port sponsoring of the Danish ports Aarhus and Copenhagen. “I am very happy,” so Sven Herlyn, former General Representative of NORD/LB for North-East Europe and now CEO of BANK DnB NORD, “that my former vision about a big Baltic Race has been taken up and I am more than happy to greet the entire fleet directly in front of my new head office in Copenhagen”.
New this year is the introduction of a 2-handed division. Event Director Henning Rocholl: “This form of sailing is a really practical option for many to whom organizing a full crew and all their supplies is just too big a task – and others who find that running a boat 2-handed gives them more room, less hassle, more of a challenge, and tremendous fun. The 2-handers are very welcome and now have the chance to join us for one or two legs adjacent to their home port.”
The Baltic Sprint Cup the unique regatta – with the football World Cup built in!
The Baltic Sprint Cup, one of the most successful regattas ever in Baltic waters starting in Stavanger Norway on Saturday July 1st 2006 taking in Gothenburg, Aarhus, Copenhagen (where a giant screen at the dockside crew party will display the final game of the football World Cup on July 9th), and on 12th July Warnemünde – scene of the memorable ShowDown party at the finish of the 2005 event. CEO Sven Herlyn of the newly-established Baltic-wide bank DnB NORD based in Copenhagen is a principal sponsor: “My vision for an event to unite the Baltic countries was superbly achieved last year in the first Baltic Sprint Cup - a fleet of 46 boats touched 8 countries. This year we are looking west to a start in Stavanger, Norway where we’ll be thrilled to join the jubilee celebrations of the Stavanger Seilforening and welcome arrivals in the Banff (Scotland)-Stavanger yacht race – we very much look forward to seeing friends from the UK joining our regatta.”
The 12-day offshore event is open to fully-crewed boats and 2-handed crews, a form of sailing rapidly gaining popularity in Scandinavia “The ease of organising crew and the comfort of moving around in a boat with plenty of space, is a highly attractive option” said Event Director Henning Rocholl. The Baltic Sprint Cup 2006 is for boats of 35 feet and up with minimum crew 4 (2 in the 2-handed division). Race Director Alan Green will again be in charge on the water: “Already friends from the 2005 Baltic Sprint Cup have signed up - there’ll be some great sailing in the waters of the North Sea, the Kattegat, Skagerrak and the Baltic. And following the Baltic Sprint Cup tradition, the parties will be legendary!”.
The Baltic Sprint Cup is open to cruiser-racers of nominal 35ft LOA and up and uses ORC Club. Details and entry form as well as amendment no. 1 to the Notice of Race are on the web site www.Baltic-Sprint-Cup.com |
