Product news:
Whether plugging into a wall receptacle at home or inserting a twist-lock cable into dockside power, boaters know the value of AC power. Since Hubbell invented both the standard household wall plug and the twist-lock connector, it knows the value of innovative and safe electrical components for landlubbers and boat owners alike. While other manufacturing giants were abandoned as new technologies emerged, Hubbell continues to thrive by adapting products to work with modern applications.
Hubbell first began supplying wiring and electrical products to the marine industry when avid yachtsman Harvey Hubbell III, son of the company's founder, designed a series of corrosion-resistant components for the fledging pleasure boating industry. When the ocean liner United States was equipped exclusively with Hubbell's electrical products in 1952, the company quickly made a name for itself in the marine business.
Over the years, Hubbell's adjusted its product line as the need for more onboard electrical power increased. The typical 20-amp shore power requirements in the 1980s changed quickly to 30-amp service and has recently even increased to 50 amps. To meet this demand, Hubbell has introduced new adaptors, cable sets and receptacles to match the current and future markets. Now that some vessels can require 100-amp service or more, Hubbell is actively growing its product line to keep pace in this area.
"We work with power center manufacturers to help them handle the electrical requirements of larger craft." said Joe DiMaria, who heads up Hubbell's marine business. "Increased power needs mean developing appropriate adaptors and receptacles to power vessels when the amperage requirements between the boat and the shore power source are different."
Hubbell works closely with business partners like International Dock Products, a manufacturer of premier shore power pedestals. Elliott Turk, president of International Dock Products, agrees that the industry continues to migrate toward bigger vessels with more accessories, appliances and systems that need more electrical power.
"Hubbell is an old-line company with a reputation for top-of-the-line materials." Turk said. "Additionally, Hubbell is represented by people of integrity who are customer-oriented. We have partnered with Hubbell for over 10 years." |
