Shanklin Town Council is seeking £20,000 to pay for a feasibility study into the possibility of creating a £4 million marina near the site of a former pumping station, off Hope Beach. The Council hopes that half the funding will come from South East Tourism, with the rest being provided by the Isle of Wight Council, Isle of Wight Economic Partnership and the town council. The study would ascertain any possible sand movements and the effect on an offshore reef, which is a site of special scientific interest.
Speaking at a public meeting, Councillor Anne Bishop said that a preliminary proposal, for a marina about five times the size of the one at Ventnor paper, had been drawn up by coastal manager Robin McInnes. He believes that the chosen site would have the least impact on beaches, but the mayor, Councillor David William, said he was not happy about the suggested site. |
