Matthew Peat:

A Squad of over 30 skiffs, representing New South Wales and Queensland is set to converge on Parramatta River to contest the highly acclaimed 71st Twelve Foot Skiff Australian Championship.

The regatta follows a long held tradition held between the two states, with a competition held every year since 1925, only halting activities through World War II.

Domination by New South Wales over the past 50 years has encouraged some strong talent coming through the Queensland ranks and this regatta will feature experienced and talented crews, including current National Champions and 2005 Interdominion winners Nick Press and Brad Yabsley on Yabba Dabba (Lane Cove), and Queensland led by former 2003 Interdominon & Nationals winner, East Coast Drillling, sailed by Paul O’Malley Jones and Paul Gleeson.

The Nationals are always a tough regatta with unpredictable breezes and weather conditions, and it takes all the crews’ talent and determination to hold their courses, however competing in the regatta is a highlight in the 12 foot calendar and is generally the last competition for the season.

Brett Hobson, President, NSW Skiff Association, is looking forward to welcoming all skiffs, crews and spectators to Abbotsford, “Our team are in great form, especially after our Interdominion results (2nd, 3rd, 5th), and we have the advantage of familiar courses and breezes. The nationals are always exciting and competitive”.

Local Abbotsford sailor, Matthew Peat, is very excited about the forthcoming national titles, “we are looking forward to the regatta, it’s always a challenge sailing against these guys, but we’re on our home ground and there is nothing like sailing on home waters.”

There is great viewing to be held from the balcony and parklands at the Abbotsford 12foot Flying Squadron, which will open its doors for the duration of the event, with the club’s bar and facilities available to all. Club enquiries on (02) 9713 2048.

The Australian Championship will mark the end of the 12 Foot Skiffs racing season, however there will be a few activities scheduled over winter.
