At sea. Volvo Ocean Race: movistar might be in Rio before midnight PDF Print E-mail

Bouwe Bekking:

It’s 0600 local onboard time and it is already getting hot, even though the sun is not totally up. It has been a beautiful night, full moon, but hardly any wind and the little bit there is, is coming from dead behind us, so a direct course is not possible. At least we are getting plenty of light-air practice for the next leg. Not to forget, the best sleeping conditions you can have, only the little noises of the water passing along the hull, one motion, you don't get rocked violently in your bunk and you don't have to wedge yourself in. It is nearly like sleeping back home.

Besides the sliding plates and electrical issues in the area's which were submerged, we are in very good shape. Haven't blown out or destroyed any of our North sails and didn't break any battens. The mainsail, which movistar has used since the start of the Volvo Ocean Race, will for sure go up again for the Transatlantic race, it has still plenty of miles in it. If I had my own boat, I would for sure "invest" in such a sail, as it will last forever.

Still spending heaps of time chit-chatting away on deck, what else is there to do? With the moon so present, there is all kind of talks about it. Have the Americans really been there? Some interesting arguments pro/con. Another question was if any of us would like to go up there if he had an opportunity? Surprisingly the answer is no, but we all agree we would like to have a look at our own planet from out in space. Although Stu (Bannatyne) reckons, using Google Earth is an easier way to observe, and it saves a lot of hassle.

Will this be the last daily of the trip? The forecast is still not very flash, 3 to 4 knots for the next 24 hours. I have to have a quick glance at the rules and what the exact wording is for the daily report and if I can slip from it, I will do. But then tomorrow is another day, and I will probably write something anyway. I realise I can't let the people down who are still following us, like for example the woman from Annapolis, who wrote us a such a kind note. So the verdict: speak to you tomorrow, unless we are in before midnight.
