Electronic news:
Adrian Flanagan, currently mid way through his solo global circumnavigation of the world, is keeping in touch and sending his reports back to the UK with the help of a satellite phone donated by SatCom Distribution.
SatCom, a leading global distributor of satellite communications equipment, has been helping to keep spirits buoyant both aboard Barrabas and back home in the UK. Louise Flanagan, Expedition Manager said “The satellite phone is the one of the most essential piece of kit on the boat. During his rounding of the Horn, Adrian’s first line computer was put out of action due to an electrical fire. Had it not have been for his SatCom phone, we would have had no reliable form of contact. Obviously it is vital for us to have an open line of communication 24/7 and at the moment we speak every day.”
Adrian has recently rounded Cape Horn and is one of only a handful of sailors to ever to have sailed west-about alone as part of a circumnavigation. The route will now take the explorer north over the Pacific towards the Bering Strait, westwards through the Arctic and then across the North Sea and back into the Channel. It is hoped that the voyage will be completed in the summer.
The phone that Adrian is using is a handheld Iridium 9505a which is both worldwide and reliable while delivering clear communications from anywhere in the world. Adrian is using the Iridium to telephone position reports and updates to the ground team in the UK, as well as using it to keep in touch with the local coastguard during his perilous trip.
SatCom Distribution provides reliable satellite communications equipment and airtime for those working and travelling in remote areas. The company offers a wide product range, covering all aspects of satellite communications equipment - hand held, portable, fixed and maritime. The leading technologies it supplies include Iridium, Thuraya, Globalstar, Inmarsat, ACeS and VSAT. |
