The Irish Planning Board (Bord Pleanála) has turned down plans for a 60 berth marina at Fota Island, on the grounds that it would disturb wildlife and endanger public safety. Developers Cityking International, had already had a planning application turned down by Cork County Council, last August.
Bord Pleanála considered that the railway crossing in the area would not be adequate for the traffic the marina would generate, saying “The proposed development would result in a significant increase in the use of the crossing, including use by vehicles towing trailers and, without satisfactory improvements to the crossing, would endanger public safety.”
Other Bord Pleanála objections included possible disturbance of the local wildlife, such as bats, badgers, owls and kestrels and a negative impact on the historic setting of Fota Castle.
Earlier this month, Senator Frank Feighan publicly claimed that members of An Bord Pleanala were under "questionable influence" and appeared to be acting as "Eco Warriers in disguise". |
