Victor Mooney:
After nearly six months, first time boat builder, Victor Mooney (41) of Woodhaven, New York, sends his boat to Senegal (West Africa) for the start of his Voyage of Hope . Mooney has christened his boat John Paul the Great, since the late Pope granted him an audience on World AIDS Day 2004.
At the end of March, Mooney will begin a 8,000 mile solo trans Atlantic Row in a 24' wooden ocean rowboat from Goree Island, Senegal and arrived at the Brooklyn Bridge some eight months later. The goal is two fold:
To encourage abstinence, AIDS prevention and education.
To pay homage to the countless number of Africans who died during the trans Atlantic Slave Trade and those who survived and lived on plantations in the Caribbean and Americas.
Mooney, 41, is a public affairs officer at the Brooklyn campus of ASA – The College for Excellence. |
