Attempts to blow up a German landmine, in the Solent, have been called off due to gale force winds. The mine was discovered, lying on the sea bed, yesterday, by the Royal Navy’s mine hunter HMS Walney.
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency sent out Securité warnings and naval divers put charges round the mine, but two attempts – at 19.00 and 22.47 last night – to destroy the mine in a controlled explosion, failed due to bad weather.
With winds now at gale force, the Walney – with its ordinance group on board - is returning to Portsmouth. A new attempt to explode the mine will be made when the weather abates.
A Red/Orange marker is being displayed 30 metres from the mine, which is in 24 metres of water. It is situated at 50° 37.7 N 01° 38.9 W, approximately 900 metres from the South Fairway buoy. |
