Marian Martin:

There are plans to refit the 212 foot steel motor yacht, Shemara, which became famous for lavish entertainment, in the post-war years and, particularly in the 60’s, when it was owned by Lady Docker.

The Shemara is now owned by reclusive multi-millionaire Harry Hyams, who many years ago, laid the yacht up, afloat in Lowestoft. Later, an attempt was made to tow her to Southampton for refit, but this was abandoned for reasons no-one seems to remember and she was towed back to Lowestoft, where her Polar Atlas engines are reputed to have been removed.

During the decades that the Shemara has been in Lowestoft, Hyams kept on some faithful old retainers, reputed to be the chief steward, the mate and an engineer who – according to legend – have, to this day, laid the table and prepared lunch daily in case the owner paid a visit. He never has, as far as anyone is aware.

Now, plans have been made to start the restoration of this classic yacht. There is no dry dock, close to Lowestoft, that is big enough to take her, so the plan is to tow her to Scotland, where the first stage of her refit is to take place. Her shafts will be drawn and her engines rebuilt, or replaced.

Earlier this month, millions of pounds worth of antiques and fine art, described as being of "great rarity and of museum quality", were stolen from Hyam’s 17th century manor house, Ramsbury Manor. The many people, who would like to see this gracious vessel at sea again, hope that this setback will not result in the eccentric millionaire abandoning plans to restore the Shemara.
