An FA-18 Hornet fighter has been lost at sea, about 400 kilometres south east of Brisbane, whilst trying to land on the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. The incident occurred during Saturday night.

The Ronald Reagan, which is on its first overseas deployment, had left Brisbane, on Friday, on an exercise, after a visit that is said to have been worth $ millions to the local economy, but which has also caused a certain amount of criticism. This arose after fishermen found sacks of rubbish, including fast food containers, plastic bottles and disposable cutlery, with papers showing that they had come from the aircraft carrier.

According to ABS TV, a spokesman for the Ronald Reagan said the bags had been dumped on error with bags of glass and metal, which can legally be dumped overboard at sea.
