Hurricane news:
"Women of the Storm," a non-partisan, non-political group of approximately 130 women from metropolitan New Orleans and South Louisiana, will travel by charter flight to Washington, DC on Monday, January 30 to hand deliver to Members of Congress invitations to visit New Orleans and the surrounding region. By seeing the devastation first-hand Women of the Storm members are certain that government leaders will better understand the urgent need for federal support.
130 Members of "Women of the Storm" on Monday, January 30, 2006 at 11:00 am Press Conference On the grounds of the United States Capitol to urge the federal government to keep its promise to rebuild Louisiana and protect the state's coast, the group will hold a press conference at eleven o'clock on January 30th on the steps of the United States Capitol. The group will also demonstrate their desire that Congress re-direct 50 percent of the oil and gas revenues generated in Louisiana to the state to provide a steady stream of funding for coastal restoration and protection. Following this event, the women are scheduled to meet with individual Members of Congress and several members will meet with the Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush at the White House.
"Historians will look back on this period of time following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita as a defining moment for both our state and nation," said Anne Milling, Founder of Women of the Storm. "To neglect the needs of this vital region sets an unimaginable precedent for America's response to future catastrophes in our nation. Our elected leaders need to see for themselves -- block by block, mile by mile -- the immense devastation, and the pressing challenges faced by so many people in this region."
"Women of the Storm" is a non-partisan non-political alliance of Louisiana women whose families, businesses and lives were impacted by the hurricanes. Members are culturally, socially and economically diverse and are bound by their passion for their communities and the need for the elected leadership of this country to respond to the urgent needs of the areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita |
