Gill Tickner:
The race organisers Woodvale have reported yet another capsize, which took place on Tuesday. The crew onboard Serenity Now capsized at 14:17 and were rescued unharmed at 2200 by the same boat that rescued Digicel! The boat did not self-right as the hatch to the aft cabin was open at the time.
Woodvale Events have given the following estimated arrival times for the next five boats: Atlantic Prince Friday 27 January 2006 (early morning); Team Scandlines Saturday 28 January 2006 (afternoon); Atlantic Warrior Sunday 29 January 2006 (afternoon); Row4Cancer Tuesday 31 January 2006; Row4Life Tuesday 31 January 2006.
The youngsters onboard Atlantic Warrior continue to increase their lead on Row4Life and are now 43 miles in front and 38 miles further west. Charlie and Phil will have to work harder to reach the finish line, as they are still 8 miles too far south, whereas Atlantic Warrior are on a more direct course.
It is likely to be a very close finish between Row4Life and Row4Cancer. The latter are 21 miles in front of Charlie and Phil, but due to a leg injury only have one crew member doing all the rowing. Row4Cancer are also on a better line to the finish, so will have to battle less with north-easterly winds. Over the last 24 hours Charlie and Phil have had easterly winds, making it easier to come north, but traditional trade winds normally bring north-easterly winds, which may slow their progress toward the finish line as they struggle to point in the right direction.
Charlie rang in yesterday evening. “The weather is a bit easier now – it makes a very pleasant change! We’ve got 270 nautical miles left now, which is 135 miles each. We are creeping north and have passed the 57-degree mark, so we are happy! The weather really makes a difference to our moods and we really enjoyed an incredible daybreak today and beautiful moon last night. Don’t worry about our food rations, as we packed for 60 days of full rations, but many more half rations. Today’s problem is that we’ve run out of Hobnobs, but we do still have some fruit cake left!”
“We saw a big blue tail earlier, but not sure if it was a shark or a whale. It followed us for about an hour. We bunked up again in the night, as we are preserving our bodies, in general we are pretty knackered, cut and bruised, and we don’t want to damage ourselves any more than necessary. So we go for it in the day, and rest at night – it seems to make sense and I’m sure we’ll need a different kind of energy for the finish…the atmosphere is good, the sun is out – all happy on the good ship Row4Life!”
Woodvale have also confirmed that they will not announce the official race times of any teams until the last boat crosses the line.
A Happy Charlie
Charlie rang in this morning sounding happier than ever. “You wouldn’t believe it, but it hasn’t rained for a whole 24 hours! We might even be able to wash our bottom later, the boat bottom…not ours, ours are beyond repair, but I’m looking forward to drying mine out from round the pool in Antigua…the poor buggers on Serenity Now, shows the weather is still strong behind us…please pass a message Alison, the mother of the boys on Atlantic Warrior and tell her not to fret. The weather seems to be better and the wind has dropped. Also, please ask the boys to show some respect to their elders behind them and slow down a bit! We’ve sorted out our food and raided our spare rations, so we’ve got the food we like. We’ve saved almost all our strawberry icecream (mush) for you and Caroline – it is truly disgusting! Phil would like to say thanks to Darren and Michelle for all their messages and that he can’t wait to see them in a couple of weeks time..”
