At sea. Atlantic Rowing Race: Twelve rowing days left to Antigua for Row4Life PDF Print E-mail

Gill Tickner:

When Charlie and Phil set off from La Gomera, they were anticipating a worst-case scenario of a 55-day race. Now on Day 50, they hopefully have approximately 12 days to go with their current earliest ETA being Sunday 29th January. If Sunday 29th is achieved, this would mean they would have been at sea for 60 days – and that’s exactly what they packed for. If their progress slows at all, for whatever reason, they will need to slow down slightly with their food rations, but will have plenty of snacks to see them through. An additional 5 days to their expectation is not too bad considering the number of storms they have weathered.

The race organisers Woodvale Events, confirmed yesterday that NEVER before have they had so many boats capsize in previous races and even rarer, is seeing the boats not self-right. Mother Nature has played her tricks on the fleet since the start, giving them an entirely different race to what they all expected. Who knows if the crews would have even left, had they known what they would have to go through..

The Row4Life team has Atlantic Warrior, two young lads from Bristol hot on their heels, but are doing what they can to keep them at bay. Atlantic Prince and Scandlines seem to have had a worse sea state than Row4Life over the last two days, allowing Charlie and Phil an opportunity to gain 7 and 12 miles on them respectively. Bout De Vie, the two French amputees have overtaken Spirit of Cornwall, which could result in an impressive podium finish for the two men.

EDF are now due in to Antigua in the early hours of tomorrow, and are reported to have a hoard of British media waiting to see them in. Depending on the timing of their ETA, expect to see coverage either tomorrow or Friday. C2 are due in late Friday or early Saturday.

Charlie rang in yesterday with a tone of voice resigned to the fact that they must just get through another fat week of uncomfortable living. “The wind lifted a bit in the night, which was a welcome relief, and we even rowed our regular shift throughout the night. We feel quite slow for some reason, but have still achieved our daily target of another degree to the west, so we are fine with that. We had some good advice on how to look after our bottoms, so everyone will pleased to hear that they are feeling a lot better now!! On that note, I’ll leave you with that thought and sign out for another day..”

As Charlie and Phil’s message spreads literally round the world, they were delighted to hear from Phil Collins yesterday. "It's a levelling experience knowing that there are people out there still pushing the envelope...real life drama, life and death stuff...I wish them all the very best of luck and safety." Mick Jagger was also told about their challenge by a friend of Charlie’s, who said, “You friends are doing what….!?!?!”
