Donal Hanrahan:
Speaking to Ciaran and Gearoid last night via the Hispanic Spirit's phone, they both sounded rested and were looking forward to getting home. The phrase "I'd love a pint" kept popping up in conversation so I can assume that they have recovered well. Gearoid described how they could hardly walk for the first day, as the 35 days on a small boat with little to do for exercise but row had taken their toll. The last few days have been spent sleeping, eating, sleeping chatting with the crew of the Hispania Spirit, sleeping and watching movies in the ships movie room. Did I mention that they are doing a lot of sleeping? In many ways they think that the time between rescue and arrival has been really good for them, allowing them time to physical recover before meeting family and friends, remembering that aside from the dramatic events of Sunday night, they had been enduring a punishing routine of two hours on two hours off for 35 days prior to Sunday night
Ciaran has some bruising in his shoulder and is on anti-inflammatory drugs He has been advised to get an X-ray on his return. Considering how sore his shoulder has been, he damaged it during the initial capsize, he was amazed how pure adrenalin must have driven him up the rope from the life raft to the ship on Sunday night - shoulder or no shoulder he was getting off that raft and on to the ship!
Arrival Arrangement:
Pending confirmation of the docking time for the Hispania Spirit in Cartagena, Spain, the provisional arrangements for Gearoid and Ciaran's arrival home to Dublin are as follows;
Sunday, 3:00 pm Great Southern Hotel, Dublin Airport.
Due to security restrictions in place at Dublin Airport, it has been decided to meet family, friends and any media wishing to attend at the Great Southern Hotel immediately following customs clearance. The crew will not be stopping in the Arrivals Hall at Dublin Airport. Additional updates may follow regarding the time of arrival - these will be posted on www.atlanticchallenge.ie. If you do wish to welcome the lads home - and it's a great idea - please check with the website prior to travelling in case the arrival time changes.
Neptune Rowing Club is hosting an informal Welcome Home Party for the crew from 7.30 pm on Sunday night at their club house which is located at Longmedows, Islandbridge, Dublin - time for that long awaited "pint"!
Many thanks to everyone who has sent in message of support for the lads. These will be brought to Spain on Saturday to be give to Ciaran and Gearoid when they disembark from the Hispania Spirit.
Best regards
