Gill Tickner:
The Row4Life team has made some small, but morale-boosting gains to the west on boats in front. 1 mile on Scandlines, 8 miles on Row4Cancer and 2 miles on Atlantic Prince. Charlie and Phil are worrying about having come so far south, but it is too early to know if this is going to cause problems in the later stage of the race. Antigua is still approximately 35 miles to the south of them.
EDF have continued to pull away from the rest of the fleet with just 614 miles to go to the finish. They are even making gains on the team of 4 just in front of them. Assuming (which is always dangerous) that there are no more storms or nasty surprises in store for the teams, attrition is likely to be the only thing to change the ranking of the top 3. It is incredible that EDF and C2 have been able to push quite so hard for the entirety of the race and neither team has reported any major problems. Teams will have to be extra vigilant as they near the finish, as mistakes are commonplace as teams begin to relax towards the end. The weather will continue to help or hinder right until the very end.
Apologies from Charlie and Phil for not being able to respond to individual messages from everyone, but they are still very much appreciated. Particular thanks from Charlie to Terry and Ant – your recent messages were “spot on.”
Yesterday’s major issue was the state of their bottoms. “We are both in agony with no respite. Apart from hurting when we row, even the rocking of the boat is extremely painful.” They set off from the Canaries with bits of a sheepskin rug, doubled up on the seats. They only took 1 spare seat cover each, which has not been enough. As soon as they get wet, they are ruined. The main cause of sores is from salt crystals after getting wet, so they have been advised to wash with water, dry out in the cooler hours of the day to avoid sunburn adding to the problem and then to apply large quantities of sudocreme – a routine to repeat twice a day. Open sores need to be washed with iodine and then covered with gauze. You can picture the scene…. They are also taking a lot of nurofen for all their many aches and pains, having been thrown around so much since the weekend.
“Our shift pattern is a little out of sync at the moment. We thought the weather was settling down yesterday night, every time the moon came out it felt as if it was a turning point and that we were going to have wind and swell from the same direction, but then it just shifts round again,” said Charlie yesterday. “Our perception of time is so different to usual, one day seems like an absolute eternity. I guess that’s hard to imagine from land.”
122 miles until they reach the 2/3rds of the race mark!
