BMF news:

The British Marine Federation/Marine South West Schools Marine Challenge is now in its fourth year. This year it launches into the South East too. With Marine South East BMF has put together a funding package from private and public sources to enable 12 schools from the region to participate.

The competition gives schools the opportunity to link with a local company to design, build and ultimately race boats powered either by solar energy, electric or petrol engine. Working alongside companies (who can provide technical support, design ideas, resources and materials alongside sponsorship and marketing) introduces pupils to the marine industry in the context of exciting and challenging technology. Companies benefit from an enhanced reputation, recruitment of more and better apprentices, and they find the fun motivates their own people.

As well as engaging the pupils directly involved it captures the interest of friends and relatives. Media coverage of coordination events has also brought the maritime sector to the attention of the general public.
