Association news: Kenneth J. Alvey has been named Executive Vice President of the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association (LEMTA) and is expected to succeed President & CEO Norm Schultz when he retires next spring. Alvey is the former Chief of the Ohio Division of Watercraft, and as such was the state’s top boating administrator. He brings a 30-year background in boating programs management, safety education, law enforcement and facilities development projects to his new position. “He’s a perfect fit,” said LEMTA Board Chairman Dave Gerber in announcing Alvey’s appointment. “Alvey has headed up one of the nation’s most successful boating programs. He and our current President, Norm Schultz, have worked together on a variety of boating events, projects and legislative initiatives in what has been called a model public-private partnership spanning many years. He is very popular with Ohio’s major boat owner organizations and brings a wealth of experience working with state and federal lawmakers and regulatory agencies to expand boating opportunities,” Gerber added. Schultz announced last summer that he planned to retire in 2006 after more than 33 years as LEMTA’s president. He will become President Emeritus next May 1. Alvey has served on a variety of national and local organizations including the National Water Safety Congress, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, Greater Cleveland Safety Council, Spirit of America Foundation, among others. He is the recipient of many awards including the U.S. Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, Ohio Director’s Valor Award and the Irv Gray Memorial Award. He is a graduate of Ohio University and resides with his wife Cathy in Brecksville, OH. They have two adult daughters. Alvey will become only the 3rd president in the history of LEMTA which is marking its 50th Anniversary this year. Recognized as one of the marine industry’s most active regional trade groups, LEMTA has extensive legislative, educational and promotional programs, and annually produces 4 Great Lakes regional boat shows including the Cleveland Mid-America Boat Show in January; the VIP Yacht Show at CIC in May; the Michigan City In-Water Boat Show in August; and the North American Boat Show at Cedar Point each September.
