Coralie Rassinoux:
Mike Golding will be, officially, named FICO World Champion on Friday 6th January at the London Boat Show. Mike has dominated the sailing world over the last season and his consistent performances in some of the most gruelling solo ocean races have earnt him this impressive accolade.
In an award system dominated by French sailors, Mike (45, from Warsash, Hampshire) has shown tenacity and fortitude in the most demanding and extreme of races. The FICO (Federation Internationale de la Course Oceanique) rankings table for skippers takes into consideration the oceanic events of the previous two seasons with two transatlantic races in 2004 (the single-handed Transat Plymouth-Boston and the fully-crewed transatlantic from Quebec to Saint Malo) and four major races in 2005 (Vendee Globe, Faraday Mill Ostar, Route de L'Equateur and Transat Jacques Vabre ). Mike's award is all the more remarkable as the rankings take into account performances in multihulls as well as monohulls.
Mike will also be awarded two World Speed Racing Records at the Show. He is the new World Record holder for the fastest crossing of both the Indian and the South Pacific Oceans while sailing single-handed in his Open 60 monohull, Ecover. These 'Cape to Cape' records (Cape Agulhas to South East Cape [Tasmania] and South East Cape to Cape Horn) literally make Mike one of the fastest people to have travelled through the perilous Southern Ocean. He also holds the record for the fastest crossing from Cape Town to Charleston, South Carolina - a record which he has now held for 8 years. |
