Jack Straw:

The Foreign Secretary has issued the following statement in relation to the first anniversary, on 26 December, of the Indian Ocean Tsunami: "At this time, when we all remember the tremendous devastation of last year's Indian Ocean Tsunami, I would like to express the government's - and my own - sympathy to those who have suffered bereavement, injury or trauma due to the terrible events of Boxing Day last year. My Ministerial colleague at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, David Triesman, is in Thailand today for the anniversary events hosted by the Thai government. Our High Commissioner in Sri Lanka will attend the commemorative ceremony there. As Tessa Jowell has said, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, DCMS and the Red Cross Tsunami Support Network have worked hard to offer support to all those affected. That important work will continue, as does learning the lessons of where we could have done better. The prayers and best wishes of people throughout the United Kingdom are with you at this difficult time."

The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell, has also issued the following statement:

"My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost people they loved in the Indian Ocean Tsunami last year, and with all those whose lives have been changed forever-whether through injury, trauma, or the devastation it has caused. My department continues to work with the Foreign Office and the Red Cross Tsunami Support Network to offer some support to everyone who has been affected by the disaster."
