Russ Jefferys:
Skipper Craig Miller and the crew of Durban claimed their first place glory today at the Clipper prize giving ceremony in Perth, WA. The skipper had a surprise phone call from rugby hero, ex-Springbok captain Bobby Skinstad who wanted to congratulate his fellow South African hero. Bobby said: “Craig, I am in awe of your achievements. You are doing a fantastic job for Durban and for our country. You are a national hero right now and we are all very proud of you!”
Over 200 guests attended the prize giving which saw Durban take first place, with second and third positions going to Victoria and westernaustralia.com. The ceremony took place in the spectacular grounds of James Mitchell Park on the banks of the Swan River.
Cardiff Clipper Exhibition:
Whilst the Clipper fleet celebrate in the Australian sunshine, the people of Cardiff can get a taste of the action with the opening of the Cardiff Clipper Exhibition at the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre. The exhibition was launched last week by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Freda Salway along with local school children who are following the race as part of the Clipper World Classroom Education Programme. The exhibition includes a recreation of parts of the boat so that visitors can experience the cramped living conditions, an interactive map and touch screen displays. Smells from the sea have also been created such as ‘ocean breeze,’ ‘fresh bread’ and even ‘dirty laundry!’
Cllr Freda Salway said: “Cardiff Clipper is doing so well and it’s been exciting to follow its progress around the world online. Now school children throughout Wales can support Cardiff Clipper and enhance their learning from their own classrooms, and with this interactive exhibition, visitors to Cardiff Bay can feel closer to the high seas action on the other side of the world.”
