Boat builder news:

At this year's London Boat Show, Fairline Boats plc will launch 'The Apprentice of the Year' awards to mark the success of their apprenticeship scheme, as well as to recognise the most dedicated apprentice from 2005.

The awards, which will be presented by Phil Hope, Minister of Skills and Derek Carter, Fairline's CEO will take place on the Fairline Stand (S2340) at 3.00pm on Tuesday 10th January 2006.

Robert Di Rienzo, who is currently studying the BMF NVQ 1 in Boat Production and Services has been selected as the '2005 Apprentice of the Year'. Robert was selected from 25 apprentices who are all studying towards NVQs as part of the newly introduced scheme, which sees the students work at Fairline, as well as benefit from day release to attend Tresham college in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Commenting on the awards, Derek Carter, Fairline's CEO stated; “The success of the apprenticeship programme has been remarkable. The calibre of apprentices has been astounding and we are delighted to be able to present this award to Robert in recognition of his hard work and dedication to both the theoretical and practical aspects of the course. At Fairline we are committed to developing our young employees' skills, many of whom will become the Master Builders of our future. We are keen to continue these awards in recognition of the success of the scheme and to develop the opportunities we can provide young people whom would like a career in the leisure marine boating industry.”

Along with the Science, Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies Alliance (SEMTA), the British Marine Federation was involved in the development of the course earlier this year, which offers opportunities in the marine industry. The industry today is worth Ł2 billion and is currently growing at a rate of 8% per annum. It is also largely export led and Fairline by example currently export 95% of their boats world-wide. Employing over 30,000 employees the industry offers an exceptional career for those who take part in this apprenticeship scheme. Fairline, as one of the four key players in the power boat building industry, are strongly committed to being at the forefront of this exciting growing initiative, which can see apprentices achieving up to level 3 NVQs over a period of 3 years..
