Barby MacGowan:

With the holiday season in full swing, the Storm Trysail Club reminds sailors that the registration deadline for its Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race is January 6, 2006. The annual 160-nautical mile race begins January 11 and runs along the Florida Keys to the fun-filled town of Key West.

"In addition to being a great way to get down to the Keys, the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race is a perfect family race," said Bob Meagher, Race Chairman of the 31-year-old race. "It is a short, overnight race that can be both challenging and fun for all offshore racers. We will assist anyone with getting the proper information they need to prepare for this year’s race."

To date, over 38 boats have registered, ranging from the largest, a Santa Cruz 68, owned by Hank Hofford and Susan Ford (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) to the smallest boat, a 28-foot Thompson 870 owned by Bill Bollin (Sylvania, Ohio).

Local Fort Lauderdale sailor Chris Woolsey returns to the race, sailing his SR33 Mostly Harmless. "Last year’s race was phenomenal," said Woolsey, who first took part in this race as a teenager, crewing for his father. "The breeze was almost perfect. Once we got to Miami we were blasting down waves on a plane the whole way. It’s hard to find a better place to end up. If you can’t have fun in Key West, you’re in the wrong sport!"

A decades-old collaboration between the Storm Trysail Club and Lauderdale Yacht Club, the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race features a healthy showing of sailors in classes for One-Design, Multihull, IRC and PHRF. In 2005, over 40 teams participated, with Mirage, the Hobie 33 owned by Christian Schaumloffel (Virginia Beach, Va.) the overall winner on corrected time.

A skippers meeting and cocktail party takes place January 10 at Lauderdale Yacht Club, with the awards scheduled for January 13 in Key West.

The Storm Trysail and Lauderdale Yacht Clubs were both formed in the 1930s, with the Storm Trysail Club’s main station established in Larchmont, N.Y. and Lauderdale’s clubhouse established in Ft. Lauderdale, site of this year’s Race Headquarters. The Turtle Kraals Restaurant Bar in Key West will serve as the finish headquarters.
