Kevin McPherson:
In reviewing 2005 it certainly could be described as an eventful year for NZ Marine. International trading conditions remained difficult for exporters, however the NZ Marine recreational and workboat industry exports achieved NZ$535 million, a remarkable performance.
A number of successful combined marine events were held in New Zealand during the year including Yacht Vision’05, Auckland International Boat Show, Marinas8, Marine Trades Challenge and the New Zealand Marine Industry Conference among others. Several incoming International trade missions exposed potential clients to our industry with many members hosting these visitors.
The number of International Boat Shows NZ Marine participated in increased from 3 to 7 shows, with member participation up on 2004. Although there were many highlights, surviving Hurricane Wilma would have been the greatest challenge. To those members who contributed their time and effort to make these shows successful we are most grateful. For 2006 NZ Marine plans to exhibit at 8 events and is investigating possible Export Trade Mission opportunities.
International success was achieved by a number of individuals and companies who were recognised for their innovation, work skills and products at various international events and shows during the year. Special mention should be made to the achievements of Kay Madigan (Auto Anchors) Nth America market, Ron Hanley (Fastmount) Asian Market and Mark Boyce (Alloy Yachts) International market, for the success they brought to both their companies and New Zealand.
Trade opportunities also increased with NZ Government signing off a Free Trade agreement with Thailand, CER with Malaysia, and progress with China on FTA.
Strategic partnerships have been important to industry growth. NZTE contribution and support has been critical to the industry success. Working closely with NZTE considerable effort is going into both branding and exhibitor presentation at Boat Shows. The need to “raise the bar” to match international competition will be critical to members future success. A number of member companies are also developing international strategic alliances that recognize joint benefits in the future.
Positive advancement was also achieved with a more integrated marine industry. The consolidation of MIA, BITO and NZ Marine under the same roof is expected to achieve better synergies and cost savings. It does not lessen the importance of NZ Marine objective to assist members in developing our export sector. NZ Marine was a new team in 2005 and we would be understating the challenges faced and rapid learning curve that has taken place.
What I have enjoyed most in my short tenure at NZ Marine has been the opportunity to meet with you the members. Face to face contact I believe is the most successful method of developing a united industry. For those members whom we have not yet met, you remain on the radar screen.
The NZ Marine office will be closed over the holiday period, re-opening on the 9th January.
On behalf of the NZ Marine team we wish you all an enjoyable Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year.
