Thirty-five-year-old Swiss skipper Steve Ravussin skipper of Banque Covefi crossed the Boston finish line at 17:27:04 GMT on Saturday (12.6.04) finishing the 2800 mile race in an elapsed time of 12 days, 4 hours, 27 minutes and 4 seconds. It was a tough race for Ravussin on his first Transat race - he damaged his main rudder early on in the race in the first big storm that also inflicted sail damage to his Solent. At one point during the race he had to climb inside the mast to make repairs.
It will be a disappointing finish for Ravussin who said before the start: "We have the bonus of going against the elements. So victory will be even more fabulous!" This is only Ravussin's second season full season in the driving seat but he has already proved himself to be a highly capable single-hander. In the 2002 Route du Rhum, Ravussin survived the terrible weather at the start of the race and was holding what appeared to be an unssailable lead until he capsized 734 miles from the finish line in Guadaloupe.
Ravussin has sailed extensively with the Bourgnon brothers on Primagaz as well as Franck Cammas' Groupama. It was with Cammas that the duo scored victory in the 2001 double-handed Transat Jacques Vabre race.
Ravussin is one of the great characters on the ORMA circuit with a lively personality and a great sense of humour - no one doubts he will bounce back from this one
