Company news:
Newage Transmissions’ StepDrive two-speed automatic marine gearboxes - capable of dramatically improving the performance of boats fitted with Volvo Penta diesel engines - will be highlighted alongside three further members of the PRM transmissions range as part of the company’s presentation on Stand S2604 at the London International Boat Show in January.
Developed by Newage as a retrofit product for the Volvo Penta Duoprop 290 drive leg, StepDrive is particularly suitable for pleasure craft applications. It fits entirely within the centre section of the Volvo unit and, when operating in top gear, does not affect the leg's overall reduction ratio.
The new gearbox has been designed both for use with naturally-aspirated engines such as Volvo Penta AD31 and 41 series - as well as supercharged units up to the KAD 44. During acceleration, it automatically changes from low to high gear at a pre-determined engine speed, which is optimised to the individual boat and engine combination. When the boat slows again, low gear is engaged as the engine speed falls below 1500 rev/min.
The transmission’s reduction gearing increases propeller efficiency both at slow speeds and during acceleration, making StepDrive the ideal choice for marginally powered diesel-engined boats or for enhancing performance if owners switch from petrol to diesel units. Additionally, the gearbox’s ability to closely match engine torque and power curves frequently allows boats to be re-propped to achieve higher top speeds.
Other high efficiency Newage gearboxes on show at ExCel will include PRM 120, 150 and 500 models.
Designed for pleasure boat applications, the PRM 120 is one of the UK’s most popular gearbox choices for inland waterway applications. It features a simple lightweight design with mechanically actuated, maintenance-free cone clutches for both ahead and astern drive. The gearbox is designed for standard rotation engines and is offered with a range of three drive ratios.
PRM 150 and PRM 500 are suitable for engines rated at up to 95 hp (72 kW) and 255 hp
(190 kW) respectively. They are both offered with a range of drive ratios and their twin countershaft design enables full power to be transmitted in ahead or astern, with either left or right hand propellers. They also incorporate hydraulically-operated, adjustment-free multi-disc clutches, which provide rapid response to movements of the control lever - for good boat handling and manoeuvrability. Like all PRM gearboxes, they are backed by a full two years warranty and Newage’s world-wide service, spares and support network.
High Efficiency PRM StepDrive and layshaft gearboxes to be featured on Stand S2604 at ExCel between 6-15th January |
