£700,000 funding, from the Welsh Assembly Government's Catching the Wave initiative will increase moorings in Burry Port Harbour by 190 berths in the Outer Harbour and East Dock.

The “Catching the Wave” strategy, which was launched at the Southampton Boat Show, in 2004 aims to increase Wales’ annual revenue from water sports by 40% within 6 years, taking The expansion of Burry Port Harbour is part of a plan to increase permanent and visitor berths along the Welsh coast and provide a chain of safe havens every 10 to 20 miles.

The new moorings at Burry Port will bring the total number of berths up to 490, with an expected £3 million per annum boost to the local economy. Further expansion of mooring facilities, in the future, will be possible as the West Dock has the capacity to increase the present number of moorings from 40 to 180.

“Catching the Wave” also hopes to enable Wales to challenge France, the European leader in watersports activities, by providing facilities for leisure activities such as competitive sailing, wind surfing, kite boarding and kayaking. At its launch, Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies said "Few destinations can match Wales' natural assets and the launch of Catching The Wave will develop one of our most important natural assets and position Wales as a premier water sports destination."
