Pirates of the Caribbean watch captain Freddy Loof has been replaced by Australian Anthony 'Youngster' Merrington ahead of the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, starting on 2 January 2006.

The 35 year-old Swedish sailor, one of the most accomplished Star class sailors in the world, decided to withdraw from the race due to family commitments, a team statement read.

Merrington joined the Pirates shore crew in early October, but has plenty of Volvo miles under his belt having raced with Team SEB in the 2001-2002 Race. His first race sailing with the team will be the Cape Town In Port Race on 26 December.

Merrington, 34, who has also raced multihulls, arrived in Cape Town today with the rest of the Pirates crew to crank up their preparations for the in port racing and the start of the second leg to Melbourne.

On Saturday, skipper Paul Cayard plans to get the boat back in the water; then on Monday they will go offshore for a few days of ocean sailing ahead of the second leg, which will be one of the most demanding of the race for both the boat and crew.

On 16 December, the team sponsor Pescanova is organising a special event in Cape Town, to present the crew and the boat to 1,000 school children of Cape Town, who will all be kitted out in yellow oilskins.
