David Brooks:
This month the IHCA is very pleased to announce the new IHCA Youth Coordinator, Brian Phipps. Brian is the former Royal Yachting Association Youth Multihull Coach. Brian is available to assist you set up your youth training. Even if you have already established youth training please contact Brian so he can share your ideas with the rest of the world.
In November the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), the peak body of sailing had their annual conference in Singapore. There were some events that will affect the Hobie Class.
The Hobie 16 with Spinnaker is the only multihull equipment for the 2006 & 2007 ISAF Youth Worlds. The ISAF Council added another boat to the multihull equipment list in addition to the Hobie 16 with Spinnaker for 2008 onwards. While at present this new boat does not meet the ISAF Regulations (insufficient numbers to be a Recognised Class) it is envisaged that ISAF will change their Regulations in 2007 to assist the new boat. The Hobie 16 with Spinnaker will remain on the equipment list for future ISAF Youth Worlds.
The IHCA did try to include the women’s multihull discipline for future ISAF World Sailing Games. While the women’s multihull discipline is included for the 2006 ISAF World Sailing Games in Austria, ISAF have decided to see how many teams attend the World Games in Austria, the review then attendance. It is important for the future of women’s multihull sailing that as many teams as possible register before the 1st February 2006 deadline. As this is an ISAF event not a Hobie event you will need to contact your National Sailing Authority and convince them to nominate a women’s team. So let us see a big men and women multihull discipline at the ISAF Sailing Games in Austria. If you want to know more about the ISAF Sailing Games they have a comprehensive web site http://www.worldsailinggames2006.at/
ISAF also agreed to delay the implementation of RRS 40.2 the quick release trapeze harness. Originally the rule was to take effect on 1st January 2006, it appears now it will come into effect in 2009 which coincides with the new ISAF rule book. ISAF will send out more information educational material and when this becomes available it will go on the IHCA web site.
At the recent the IHCA Council agreed to Class Rules policies. These policies can be found at the IHCA Class Rules web site http://www.hobieclass.com/default.asp?Page=3565&ampampampampampampampampMenuID=Class%5FRules%2F10773%2F0 These policies define the update procedure on the Hobie Tiger and clarify that the Hobie 16 with Spinnaker is for Youth only at IHCA controlled events.
