“Ericsson falls into the light”
After the excitement of the last 24 hours, which saw the first three yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race finish leg one. Cape Town is waiting with baited breathe today, for the fourth yacht Ericsson (Neal McDonald) to arrive. But they seem to have fallen into a light and fluky breeze on their final approach and are currently sailing at 7 knots with 192 nautical miles to the finish.
At the other extreme, the Sunergy and Friends (Grant Wharington) team are having their fastest 24 hour period, racking up a massive 490 nautical miles. They still have 1690 nautical miles till they can celebrate but at least they are averaging 23 knots, which must be a relief for the crew. “I just hope that they leave some beer over for us when we get in!” Campbell Field wrote yesterday.
