Marine Minister Pat the Cope Gallagher T.D., today addressed a joint Ireland/Wales marine leisure conference taking place in Dublin.

The conference highlighted the efforts being made jointly by Ireland and Wales in the development of a sustainable marine leisure market. The INTERREG Ireland/Wales Programme has brought together the Irish Federation of Marine Industries and North Wales Watersports Limited in a partnership designed to develop the Irish Sea into a leading European marine leisure market, underpinned by collaboration in joint marketing, product development and training.

At the conference, Minister Gallagher said, "The potential benefits from such programmes are not only manifested in quantifiable projects but also in the strong ties and friendships that ensue from the close co-operation required in bringing a joint project to fruition."

Minister Gallagher also noted the importance of some local marine leisure projects that are now underway. In particular the harbour twinning programme, one aspect of the INTERREG project. This encourages disadvantaged groups, inner city and youth outreach groups to participate in the "Water sports for all" initiative. This project further enhances the progress already made, widen the existing network and provide opportunities for further transnational cooperation.

The Irish Marine Federation is working in partnership on this project with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Enterprise Board, Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, the Irish Sailing Association and the Marine Institute.

In conclusion, Minister Gallagher said that, "The Interreg Ireland/Wales Programme, which has brought together the Irish Federation of Marine Industries and North Wales Watersports Limited, typifies the very essence of the spirit of the European Union. Such a Community Initiative supports co-operation and encourages partnership between the regions of the European Union and is to be supported and appaulded."
