HM Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh accompanied by the Hon. Lawrence Gonzi, Prime Minister of Malta, were welcomed to the Mediterranean’s newest superyacht marina, this morning, by Nick Maris, Chairman of both Camper & Nicholsons Marinas Ltd and Grand Harbour Marina Ltd.

ImageA large audience of yachtsmen and local dignitaries, watched the Queen formally open Grand Harbour Marina, Malta, which includes many berths for superyachts up to 100 metres and represents the highest quality of marina design, construction and services.

ImageThe marina’s unique setting, right in the heart of the old harbour, offers a special character which, together with the mild climate and sparkling coastal waters, should make it an attractive base for superyacht owners.

Malta’s strategic position in the centre of the Mediterranean also offers many new and exciting possibilities for yachting, with a typical two day cruising time from the South of France, Italy, Balearics, Croatia, Turkey and Greek Islands to the facility.

The Marina is also supported by excellent repair facilities, slipways and dry docks for all sizes of vessels. Quality hotels, restaurants and other services are all situated nearby, with VIP airport facilities just 10 minutes from the marina.

After the opening ceremony, Nick Maris said: "we are honoured that Her Majesty the Queen has today opened Grand Harbour Marina, which confirms it as one of the most prestigious and important Mediterranean marinas."

Prestigious names in world yachting have already reserved berths, including Tom Perkins, whose new 87 metre Perini Navi superyacht, the Maltese Falcon, is nearing completion.

Following the opening, the Queen and Prince Philip attended a reception onboard the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious at Pinto Wharf, before going on to lunch with the Prime Minister at Auberge de Castille.

Later, the Duke of Edinburgh will visited the Maritime Institute of the Malta College for Arts, Science and Technology to view signalling and seamanship displays.
