Volvo race news:

Following the official royal visit to the Volvo Ocean Race village, in Sanxenxo, this afternoon by His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain, a trend among the royal households appears to have been set.

Not only is race Patron HM Prince Carl Philip of Sweden stepping onboard, Ericsson as guest for the in-port race tomorrow, he will be joined on the high seas by the Infanta Dońa Cristina of Spain, who will become an honorary ‘Pirate’ for the day when she sails onboard The Black Pearl.

When asked which team he thought would win, HM Prince Carl Philip said, “That’s something I just can’t say, but I hope and believe we will have a race that is a thrilling as always. Nevertheless, I’m a Swede and since we have a Swedish entry, of course I will be rooting a little extra for it.”

Javier Vasallo, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Buena Vista International, the international film distribution arm of The Walt Disney Company in Iberia, was delighted to have a royal ‘Pirate’ onboard. “We are extremely honoured that the Infanta Dońa Cristina is joining us to begin what promises to be a very exciting, high-seas adventure”, he said,

adding, “this is the first time Disney is participating in this fabulous sporting adventure, and we are thrilled it is all commencing here in Spain”.

He might not be royal, but he is world-acclaimed, chef Gordon Ramsay also confirmed today that he will be swapping his ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ for the galley of Team ABN AMRO. And he’s not just confined to the galley, tomorrow he will be allowed on deck as he is sailing on the boat during the in-port race in Sanxenxo.

Ramsay said, “It’s a real privilege to join the team in this amazing event. It’s not often I’m on the receiving end of orders but I’m definitely going to do whatever I’m told. I’m just praying that I won’t get sea-sick and be hanging off the back of the boat! Seriously though, I’ve been a sailing fan for a long time and have enormous respect for these guys. Many of the traits involved in this race, such as professionalism, teamwork and competitiveness, are all things I aspire to in my kitchens and it will be fascinating to see a team perform under pressure of a different kind.”
