Marian Martin The 110 foot charter yacht Cedar Island began taking water, earlier today, when about 47 miles east of Winyah Bay, South Carolina.
The Cedar Island was on its way to Fort Lauderdale, when the ship’s propellers became caught on an unknown object. The crew of the Cedar Island lost the ability to steer and the yacht began to rapidly take on water in 3 metre seas.
Rescue coordinators at US Coastguard Sector Charleston’s operation center were asked for assistance and diverted Legare, a 270-foot cutter from Portsmouth, Va., which was transiting the area, to assist the crew and a rescue and repair team from the Legare went aboard the Cedar Island to begin pumping out. <
Meanwhile, the rescue coordinators sent a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston and a helicopter from Air Station Savannah, Ga., to hoist the people from the yacht to safety aboard the Legare.
Rescue coordinators have sent the cutter Yellowfin to relieve the Legare, which was headed south for a Caribbean Sea patrol.
The Cedar Island broke free of its obstruction later and the Yellowfin will attempt to tow the yacht to safe waters. |
